The timing of Pope Leo XIV’s declaration that capital punishment is “inadmissible” because it attacks the “inviolability and dignity of the person” was not accidental. Issued on the World Day Against the Death Penalty and echoing the 2018 Catechism revision under Francis, it arrived days after the United States announced plans to execute Nidal Hasan by firing squad on December 3 for the 2009 Fort Hood massacre. Hasan, a U.S. Army major, killed thirteen soldiers and civilians while shouting “Allahu Akbar,” an act of jihad against the very nation that had trained and commissioned him. An American pope, born in Chicago, chose this moment to reaffirm a universalist teaching that places the abstract dignity of the guilty above the concrete justice owed to the dead and the security of the living. The message was clear: American particularity, and the resolve of those who defend it, must yield to Rome’s claim of moral supremacy.

This is less a development of doctrine than a strategic intervention. Traditional Catholic teaching long permitted the death penalty when necessary to protect the common good; the 2018 change treated modern prisons as sufficient in every case, effectively abolishing capital punishment by administrative fiat. Applied to Hasan, the teaching equates a calculated mass murderer who sought to aid America’s enemies with ordinary criminals, erasing the distinction between domestic lawbreaking and ideological warfare on American soil. MAGA’s insistence on borders, deportation, and measured retribution for those who wage war against the nation is precisely what such universalism cannot tolerate. Nativism, in this view, is the original sin: the preference for one’s own people, soldiers, and laws over a borderless moral order administered from abroad. By framing justice itself as an attack on human dignity, the Vatican supplies a ready-made vocabulary for those who already regard American self-preservation as illegitimate.

The deeper effect is the deliberate cultivation of discord. Catholic teaching on this point now aligns the institutional Church with the same transnational humanitarianism that has long opposed American sovereignty on immigration, trade, and national defense. Loyal American Catholics, many of them MAGA voters who supported the execution of a jihadist killer of U.S. troops, are told their instincts are morally defective. The result is predictable fracture: between the pews and the hierarchy, between citizens who remember Fort Hood and those who treat every execution as an international scandal, and between a nation that still believes in decisive justice and a Church that has redefined justice as the permanent restraint of the strong. What appears as pastoral concern is, in practice, an assertion that Rome’s moral jurisdiction supersedes the American people’s right to secure their own territory and avenge their own dead.
