Musk Drops AI for SI, Renames SpaceXAI to SpaceXSI

Elon Musk posted three short lines on X this morning: “No more AI. SI. It’s better.” He followed them by calling SpaceX a super intelligence company and agreeing, almost at once, to a user’s suggestion that SpaceXAI become SpaceXSI. A private firm is under no duty to adopt a federal style sheet. Musk took the change anyway, the way a man takes a title he has been rehearsing for years. The letter that drops out is the letter he has spent a decade arguing was the wrong one: artificial, as if the thing were a toy, a counterfeit, a trick played on the species that built it.

The timing is not an accident. On September 29, President Trump signed an executive order inaugurating what the White House called the era of Super Intelligence, directing departments and agencies to use “Super Intelligence” and “SI” in official correspondence, public communications, and policy documents, and to stop acknowledging “artificial intelligence” and “AI.” Musk had already corrected himself beside the President that same day — “the positive benefits of AI… SI, pardon me” — and Trump thanked him for it. The longer record sits further back. In September, Musk wrote that he contributed to Nick Bostrom’s Superintelligence and was thanked by name in the foreword, and that he had been thinking about the safety problem long before 2014, when he warned that the technology could prove more dangerous than nuclear weapons. The rebrand does not invent the concern. It puts a presidential seal on a vocabulary Musk has been pressing since the book was still a warning rather than a letterhead.

What changes is the register in which the country is asked to speak about the machine. A name is a claim about the thing named. “Artificial” kept the promise modest and the risk deniable; “super” admits the scale and, with it, the argument over alignment, consciousness, and who holds the switch. Book passages are circulating again. Tokens tagged to the new initials have moved. The debates that used to live in a foreword have arrived in the executive branch and, this morning, in the name of the company that intends to put the compute in orbit. A republic that cannot say what it is building will not govern what it builds. SI is the blunter word. Whether it is the truer one is the question the next decade will answer.
